the art of food exhibition

The Art of Food website for the exhibition I mentioned below is now up and running...and yup, it was built on WordPress, and yup, hopefully I can add a google map to it that shows all sorts of food related things that exist on Granville Island (to supplement the exhibition & events). Thanks DIVA for the training :-) (It is still in early stages and lots will be added as we get closer to the exibition date in January…but check it out if you like!)

The Art of Food
When people undertake the process of growing, harvesting, cooking, and consuming food, they partake in the physical nourishment of body, and they are intricately involved in a social experience. Food is necessary to sustain life, it connects us to other living beings, and it is an important part of our social fabric. It is the cause of desire, celebration, pleasure, despair, anger and guilt. Food resides at the nucleus of discussion on topics such as the environment, health, politics, science and beauty, and as such, it contributes significantly to feelings of safety and security.

The Art of Food features twenty artists who are Emily Carr Institute (ECI) Alumni, Masters or Undergraduate students, whose work deals with food in its imagery or as its medium. As varied in approach as they are in subject matter, the works reveal the intricate and diverse nature of the impact of food on our lives.

To celebrate Vancouver (Granville Island in particular) as a creative community and to demonstrate how students can be leaders in the development of creative environments. The Art of Food, envisioned and organized by ECI students, invited participation from a number of associated disciplines such as the culinary arts, theatre and performance groups, and specialists in food and drink. The Art of Food features a public lecture, film screening, and a FACTORY event.

FACTORY at ECI is an experiment in mass-production that is operating within the Ceramics Department of Emily Carr Institute. As part of The Art of Food Exhibition, a student collaborative has teamed with The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant in order to create customized utilitarian products within a contemporary art practice based on cultural inquiry. This is being run by Justin Novak, Associate Professor, Ceramics.

The Art of Food is a curated exhibition, with Sadira Rodrigues of the Vancouver Art Gallery, and Randy Lee Cutler, Associate Dean of Integrated Studies at ECI, acting as guest curators. To further tap into the realm of curatorial practices in Vancouver, student organizers have developed a panel event where 4 guest curators will respond to questions posed by the ECI student body and visiting guests.
